Iowa Democrats Show Up

Democratic voter turn out in Iowa doubles in Woodbury County

Last month we highlighted Jeremy Dumkrieger, the chair of the Woodbury County Democratic Party in Iowa.

Woodbury County recruited remarkable candidates for recent special elections. They invested in finding volunteers to canvass and phone bank on their behalf. As a result, that effort helped drive a 31-point Democratic swing in the Iowa State Senate special election.

But, the remarkable Democratic resurgence in Woodbury county doesn’t end there.

Stunning Iowa Primary Results

On June 5th  eight states across the country held primaries.

Iowa, Jeremy’s home state, saw a strong turnout from Democrats across the board.

In 2006, the last comparable primary in Iowa, Jeremy’s district saw 2,143 Democratic voters. By 2014, Democrats in Woodbury County made up just 26 percent  of the vote.

In 2018, Woodbury County saw 4,057 Democratic voters,  making up 50 percent of the vote.

That’s right. You read that correctly.

Democrats in Iowa are fired up.

Thanks to the hard work and dedication of Democrats in Woodbury County, Democratic voter turnout increased by more than 200 percent.

Jeremy believes the 2016 election served as the driving force behind the unprecedented turnout in 2018:

“The pain and disappointment we felt a year ago has evolved and been channeled into a renewed commitment to fighting for our state”

Starting from the very first day of early voting, Democrats in Iowa turned out to vote in unprecedented numbers.

To make 2018’s Blue Wave truly come to fruition, Democrats around the country must follow Jeremy and Iowa’s lead and get to the polls.

Recognizing Jeremy for His Work

Jeremy’s hard work did not go unnoticed.

On May 21st, Jeremy was named “Iowa Party Chair of the Year” by the Iowa Democratic Party..

Working alongside other members of his local party, Jeremy has worked tirelessly to build the party and elect Democrats. He is proving that grassroots members of the Democratic party can make a huge difference when they organize and work hard.

“The Woodbury County Democrats are working hard to get out the vote.  Due to our efforts over the past year, along with a talented and gifted group of candidates, we were able to exceed our expectations. Yet our amazing results didn’t catch us by surprise.  And with homegrown Democrats like J.D. Scholten running against Congressman Steve King, I can’t imagine our momentum slowing anytime soon.”

Local Leaders Around the Country

Jeremy isn’t alone in his effort to make a big difference in his community. Local leaders around the country are building the party. Democrats are stepping up. They are getting involved in their local party. In short, they are working hard to get Democrats elected.

Democrats are running where they have never run before. They’re organizing where they’ve never organized before. And, most importantly, they’re winning where they’ve never won before.

Before running head first into local politics, Joel was a music teacher, curriculum developer, and trainer working in public schools and on research funded by the National Science Foundation. After an unprecedented number of Democrats stepped up to run in 2017’s consolidated elections, Joel worked to elect the first democrats ever to serve in the history of his local township. In his free time Joel serves on his local library board, builds spreadsheets (for fun), and composes music for odd assortments of wind instruments.
