Building Your Network: Donors, Volunteers & Validators
About this course: You’re not going to win your election on your own. Successful candidates cultivate their full network of friends, relatives, colleagues, neighbors, and newfound supporters and organize those folks to help them implement their campaign plan.
In this course, you identify the people and organizations who will help you reach the voters you need to win. Specifically, you create lists of these people and organizations, research and prioritize them, and consider the ways you will ask them to help your campaign–by endorsing (or validating) you, volunteering and/or donating.
When to take this course: Take this course as soon as you decide to run–or even while you’re still considering your options–because it’s never too early to start growing and organizing your network.
Making the Ask
About this course: Asking our family, friends and neighbors for help is not something that comes easily to most of us. But if you follow our formula and approach these conversations with the right attitude, you’ll be well on your way to cultivating the things your campaign needs to succeed: money, volunteer time, and votes.
When to take this course: This is a skill-building course, so there’s never a bad time to take it. If you’re just starting out, take this course before you make your first fundraising call. If you’re further along in your campaign, this course can help you make your asks more effective.
Writing Your Fundraising Plan
About this course: Like every part of your campaign, you should have a plan for fundraising. In this course, you will write your campaign’s fundraising plan, a detailed list of the revenue sources you will rely on to hit your fundraising (and therefore budget) goals.
Specifically, you will conduct research to ground your goals; identify realistic goals for each of the 6 potential revenue streams; and write the first draft of your plan. After you complete this course and have written your fundraising plan, you will have the groundwork laid to raise your first contributions!
When you should take this course: Your fundraising plan and your budget go hand-in-hand, so before you take this course you probably want to have a draft budget–or at least an overall budget goal–and know (ballpark) how many votes you need to win.
About this course: Whether you’re a fundraising professional or a novice, this course will prepare you for raising the money you need to run a successful campaign. You will learn how to utilize each of the major revenue streams available to your campaign, including call time, fundraising mail, a Finance Committee, and Political Action Committees (PACs).
When you should take this course: Take this course after “Writing Your Fundraising Plan” to help you implement each of the fundraising tactics your campaign is going to use. Or if you’re already fundraising but struggling to meet your goals in a particular area, this course includes best practices and ideas that can up your game.
About this course: Events can be effective for meeting voters, building relationships, and raising money. They can also be a drain on valuable resources: time, money, and people. Thoughtful and thorough planning is the only way to make sure that your events are more gain than drain–this includes saying no and not holding an event at all in some cases. In this course, we will cover what you need to know to plan successful events that contribute to your field and fundraising goals.
When to take this course: Take this course 4-8 weeks before your first campaign event–be that a meet and greet or fundraisers. But if you already have a couple events on the books and coming up soon, check out the logistics section to get you ready for event day.
About this course: If email and/or social media are components of your fundraising plan, Digital 101 will help you get started on those platforms–and write content that gets results.
When to take this course: The best time to take this course is before you’ve launched your website, Facebook page, and email platform so we can help you get those right from the start. But if you already have your Facebook and email platforms set up, you can skip those lessons and focus on the sections on strategy.
